Chamonix - late June advice?

We will be spending three-four days in Chamonix (our first visit) and plan on doing day hikes.

Should we stay near the Center of Chamonix or another area?

I was looking at the Hotel Slalom in Les Houches but wondered if we would be too far out of town to enjoy restaurants and walking around in the evening.

Thanks

Les Houches is at one end of the valley La Tour at the other (17kms away) in between is Chamonix and Argentiere. I have always prefered the hikes at the Argentiere/La Tour end but if you want the nightlife etc it must be Chamonix.

Saying that Les Houches is very pretty.

Whilst there is much more choice, and more street life, in Chamonix itself, both Argentiere and Les Houches have a number of restaurants.

The public transport system is good, and free passes are available for buses: you can therefore undertake day walks in any part of the valley from wherever you choose to lodge
