visiting a cheese producer

My teenager loves french cheese and is interested in visiting a cheese producer. We are staying in Bayeux and eastern Brittany (near St. Malo). Do any of you experts know of a place that offers tours/visits?

Well, I don%26#39;t know of anywhere specific, but what I do know is that a drive around the coastal %26#39;hinterland%26#39; in that region, will net you many farms that make their own cheese, and put signs up by the road to invite you for a %26#39;look%26#39; and a tasting.

A %26#39;websearch%26#39; has revealed the following:

The village of Camembert has a %26#39;Cheese Route%26#39; that you can follow:

http://www.camembert-france.com/

Pont L%26#39;Eveque is another Normandy cheese to seek out - but the main website is all French, and I could not deciper it for you:

tp://www.pont-leveque-aoc.org/

Livarot is the third form of Normandy cheese, and you can definitely visit some of the factories, including E.Graindorge:

http://www.graindorge.fr/

and, in French, there is more information here:

http://www.livarot-aoc.org/

I HOPE this helps, but I am sure that there are locals who can REALLY point you in the right direction!!

Failing that, I have always found the local French Tourist Offices to be unfailingly helpful, so ask at the one %26#39;wherever%26#39; you are staying, and I am sure they will be able to help you.

Bon Fromage

At Isigny sur mer there%26#39;s the Isigny Ste Mère cheese factory. They have visits but you don%26#39;t actually visit the production line, hygiene dictates. You see a film then the shop.

In my opinion the Isigny Ste Mère camembert is the best. I eat it every day.

At Domaine St Hippolyte near Lisieux you can visit a farm and cheese factory. There you can see the production through windows. The farm the factory and the estate makes an interesting visit.

The town of Camembert is quite a way from Bayeux.

Not the same product but at Isigny sur mer you can visit a caramel factory. There you can stand by the production line.

You can also visit Oyster farms at Grandcamp Maisy.

And many cider and Calvados producers. Just near the American cemetery there%26#39;s the domaine Le Sapiniere.

At Pont L%26#39;eveque - Pere Magloire

In my previous post I said that Camembert is a long way from Bayeux. A long way if you just want to visit the cheese museum. But, you could make a day of it by visiting Falaise (Castle of William%26#39;s birth place), Montormel (a museum on the Falaise pocket battle) and Camembert.
