Alsace and then where?

We are beginning to plan a fall trip and will definitely spend some time in Alsace (genealogy). I am considering staying in Colmar and renting a car for a few days to get to the small towns of our ancestors and to visit the other interesting little villages.

My guess is that we will spend 4 or 5 days in Alsace; but will have two weeks for the trip. So, what would be a good %26quot;add on%26quot;. Switzerland? Venice?

We have been to Paris and driven to Brussels. We prefer to use public transportation whenever possible. We enjoy cities, small towns, scenery, hiking, etc. However, I know without a car we would be limited.

I apologize for being so vague, but we are in the early planning stages and I was hoping to get some suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Go to Switzerland and use the excellent public transport system, trains, buses, boats, cable cars , etc. If you like the mountains go to the Bernese Oberland and the Jungfrau region , if you like lakes visit the Lake Lucerne area. Fancy the South go to the Ticino, Lago Maggiore or Lake Geneva, Montreux. Northern Italy Lake Como and Lake Garda. These are the classic destinations. Check this link:

I%26#39;m with Hiker on this one - but while in the region you should also spend a few days in the Black Forest. They have some lovely hot water springs (Baden Baden is the most famous but there are many other) and also the Forest itself. If you are there at the right time of the Autumn you may get to see the leaves changing colour. While in Alsace also take a day to drive up into the Vosges and along the Route des Cretes, for some great scenery.

In Switzerland visit Basel for a day on your way through then stay in Lucerne on the lake. From there you can go up the mountains, visit Zurich and Bern on day trips, see the surrounding area easily on trains and buses.
