Chamonix & a 10-month old baby

Hi guys,

Really really need some advice here. I am planning to go to Chamonix at the end of May, but I have a 10-month old baby in tow.

What%26#39;s the feasibility of bringing this little one up to Aiguille Du Midi? Or should I just declare it crazy and scrap the idea? Then where else other than Aiguille Du Midi can I go that has nice views and is suitable for the baby?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Not sure about a 10 month old at 14000 feet due th epressure change etc. But if you are flying to Euorope that should be OK.

Definately not crazy just be aware of the lower air pressure.

The whole valley hasfantastic views. Go up to the top of Brevente on the south side of the valley and the Les Grands Montet at Argentiere.

Thanks for the advice and yup, we will be flying to Europe.

My concerns are if the cable car ascent is too fast for the baby. Oh, I just realised it should be fine as the cable car shouldn%26#39;t be faster than the ascent of a plane.. haha.

Would you happen to know if there is any rule against bringing a baby up via the Aiguille Du Midi cable car? The kind of rules that don%26#39;t allow children on rollercoaster rides?

Thanks again in advance!

You aren%26#39;t allowed on the Midi with a child under two, I%26#39;m pretty sure. The Montenvers railway would be a better choice, the surrounding area is pretty to walk around.... or drive up to the Merlet animal park from Les Houches - lovely views and no lift ticket necessary!

hmmm - actually the CMB does not recommend even Montenvers for a child that age:

compagniedumontblanc.fr/pages/…enfantAiguille

What is the minimum age to go on our sites ?

- Aiguille du Midi : It is advisable not to take children under two years old up to the Aiguille du Midi : the cabin is not pressurized and climbs very quickly to a high altitude. Remember to take sweets to help older children to swallow and to avoid the risk of otitis !

- Montenvers- Sea of ice : It is advisable not to take children under one year old up to the Montenvers-Mer de glace (elevation = 1913 meters)

Which precautions we have to take with children ?

They tend to exert themselves without counting and can meet

in state of exhaustion without forerunner.

Avoid the too rough variations of height

(risk of otitis)

Avoid taking the toddlers beyond 2500 metres

In case of doubt, consult your doctor and our page safety and rules

Also ...I doubt les Grands Montets will be open at that time of year, (Brevent should be, but at weekends only)

I guess that leaves the tramway for us then... but the drive is a good idea. After all, we are having a car then :)

Thanks!

|||

Oops, but the tramway isn%26#39;t open then.

Ok, last option - drive.

If you are driving go to the Col de Montets past Argentiere on the way to Martigny. Really pretty spot and great views.

Try Martigny about 90 mins drive. Superb views and when you are there there is a small Roman ampitheatre. A great day out.

A bit early in the year for outdoor swimming, unless you are related to a polar bear, but the indoor pool in Chamonix is good.

Yes- the Col des Montets is a lovely spot

Here%26#39;s the info for the Merlet - this is a really nice place

Also the Gorges de Diosaz in Servoz are well worth a look

and I think that Chalet Floria will be open if you fancy a walk Call them or the tourist office to check, or look for the white flag above Les Praz on the south side - you can hire baby carriers from Snell Sports if you don%26#39;t have one.
