Annecy and what other historic village in French Alps?

Hi, I need some good ideas on a second historic town to stay in while visiting the French Alps.

My wife and I will be there for several days the first week of July. We%26#39;re planning to spend part of time in Annecy and were wondering about another similar, but smaller, option. We%26#39;ll have a car. We really like small towns with some historic sites, in the mountains, scenic, etc. Annecy is a good option for a larger town/city, but we%26#39;re looking for something similar on a smaller scale. Does that make any sense?

thank you in advance for your help.

Maybe Yvoire on the French side of Lac Leman, about 20km east of Geneva. It is a beautiful old towm with a few good hotels and restaurants. There is a new upmarket small hotel on the edge of the town, Villa Cecile. From here you can take boat trips to the various towns on the lake or drives up into the mountains to lovely little towns like Abondance, La Vernaz and the Gorges du Pont du Diable,

Briancon, in the Hautes Alpes, has a charming old town section, and there are many tiny villages nearby, such as Nevache, Vallouise, Queras, etc.
