Car Rental - Nice to Turin

Hi

Can anyone recommend a good car rental agency? We want to pick up a car in Nice and drop it off in Turin 3 days later, but the one way fees with Hertz at EUR240 seem exhorbitant (and almost more than the car hireage itself).

Thanks

I think you%26#39;ll find all the rental companies will be like that. ;^(

Your best bet will likely be to take the train just over the border into Italy and rent from there. A bit of a hassle but worth it in what you%26#39;ll save.

Thanks for the quick reply. I suspected as much. They may even still charge the one way fee if we pick up over the border and drop off in Turin.

Hi --

The rental agency offices are franchises/privately owned, and if you drop off the car in a different country, they have to send someone to retrieve it since there seems to be no demurrage arrangement in place.

It%26#39;s rather like renting a car on the North Island and turning it in at the ferry, and picking up another car on arrival on the South Island, as one does in NZ.

I%26#39;ve never heard of there being a one way fee for pick up and drop off within Italy, but I suppose it could happen. As they say, never is never, never.

Please let us know what you end up paying in fees. If you do get a one way fee it should still be less than if you drop a French car in Italy.

Check these... they are brokers and may be able to get you a better deal:

I have used both in Europe and have been pleased. I see Economy gives a choice for San Remo which is close to Nice.

Great, thanks for the help.

I expect you want the car for touring around - and it%26#39;s a beautiful area to do that in.

But just in case you thought it%26#39;d be a cheap and easy way to Turin, you might want to know that the train fare to Turin is only €16 - that%26#39;s €6 from Nice to Ventimiglia, and €10 direct from Ventimiglia to Turin (other routes are also possible, at different fares). It%26#39;s a pretty journey, but takes over four hours.

If you want to hire an Italian car, the nearest place to Nice is San Remo, an hour or so away by train.

Thanks. We actually wanted the car for one day tripping outside nice (and friend said there are some cool caves near Grasse), but perhaps we can find another way there.

And then we wanted to take the scenic route through the Alps (col de Tonde - excuse if i%26#39;ve spelt that wrong), Alba/Asti and eventually to Turin.

It sounds like the train is a good option. The trenitalia website doesn%26#39;t seem to recognise Ventimiglia though.

p.s. would we need to book those trains, or can we just turn up? We are travelling in early September, circa 6th.

thanks

You would have difficulty booking, as the Trenitalia site hardly ever accepts cards issued outside Europe. Just buy tickets in Italy.
