Summer Holiday in France (10 nights) with boyfriend

Hi All,

Calling all experts on France! My boyfriend and I (late 20%26#39;s) are visiting in the summer for a 10 day holiday in late August. We are driving from the UK and doing it at our own speed but want a mix of relaxation and sun! Our intention is to take leisurely drive down, maybe one or two stops at several places of interest (I think we have got these stop-over locations sorted!) and to get at our ultimate destination which I hope will be somewhere sunny, has a pool, somewhere to relax but also a town to explore (but definitely without the car). This is where I need your help...!

Does anyone know any old/lovely/not too lively/maybe low key resort towns but with enough going on we can base our holiday around? I have been to the Vendee and Ardeche regions and love both areas but can%26#39;t think of anywhere that springs to mind. The key is not TOO lively (i.e. not loads of clubs/bars), needs to have restaurants/cafes/bar etc though (prefer a good handful), not too resort-ey but equally has enough going on (i.e. Paris/Rome too lively) but want to be able to sample local foods, have a drink or two, explore etc. I was thinking Montpelier or Aix on Provence but wondered if these weren%26#39;t holiday/lounging enough so started to think maybe somewhere by the sea....any ideas appreciated!!!!!! We love Lucca (Italy) and went to Taoromina (Sicily) last year for summer and ideally want a French version of this!

Thanks!
