In another post, someone said that Parisians hate this shopping street and that the mayor of the 7th is planning to change it. I am a bit puzzled. I frequently shop there and have found it to be adequate and pleasant. Is it because there are too many American tourists there? How is the street to be changed?
Just curious.

Nope. Its a logistical issue. A pedestrian street with all the commerce makes deliveries a nightmare for the local merchants. I don%26#39;t know why it is more of a problem than Mouffetard or Daguerre, but I suspect that those street have been pedestrian for a lot longer. The rue Cler change is relatively new.
Honestly. Parisians do NOT spend their time worry about what American tourists wear, if there are too many of them in a restaurant etc and so on. Americans, expat or visitors are rarely given a second thought.
Finally, the tourists are not the main influence on rue Cler. A LARGE expat community lives there, as it is near the Am Library, the Am University, the Am Church, etc and so on. They are the ones who have inspired the local baker to make cheescake, giftshops to open up and the rest...

And the locals hate all the gentrification going on, especially Delanoe%26#39;s erosion of parking and traffic lanes in favor of pedestrian streets and bake lanes.

I shop in the street every time I visit the American Library nearby, about once a week. I have noticed that rue Cler sometimes seems to be overrun with tourists, but I suspect that the merchants are happy enough about that, and it doesn%26#39;t bother me, as a fellow American. I just can%26#39;t imagine that the local merchants really would want to change things very much. Other shopping streets have delivery challenges too, so I think there must be more to it than that.

I also spend a morning walking the area and enjoy it very much. I just do not enjoy the homeless men on card board beds. I hope they clean that up.
How is the street to be changed? I tried to search it but found nothing.
